Why I wanted to create Sustainability Steps

Me basking in the winter sun.

I have to admit, I sometimes struggle with eco-anxiety—something climate researchers have been dealing with for a long time. When I come across studies or news highlighting drastic climate change and combine that with slow political action on environmental issues and constant imagery glorifying endless travel and consumption, eco-anxiety takes hold. I find myself reaching for a paper bag to breathe for a moment.

I decided I needed to act. At 50, I know my limits—I can't solve the climate crisis alone. But I also know my strengths: I can create meaningful concepts, facilitate impactful sessions, apply the OKR method, and understand how human communities and businesses operate. After reflecting and experimenting with different ideas, I created Sustainability Steps.

The concept is simple. Gather a group of people and ask how they perceive their role on this planet in the face of ongoing climate news. This sparks meaningful conversations. From there, we create individual roadmaps leading to small, actionable steps that help them live out that role.

The workshops I've led with this method show that people are eager to talk about sustainability—and they do so in a constructive, positive way. For many, it’s the first time they've truly paused to define their personal “sustainability mission.” They appreciate the space to reflect, discuss, and share.

By the end of the session, each participant has a practical list of changes they want to make in their daily life. These actions can be as simple as trying new recipes, planning more mindful holidays, building a home recycling station, or mapping out better bike routes.

Why focus on running these workshops in companies? Because that's the world I know best. And even though these Sustainability Steps are personal, they naturally lead to meaningful discussions about corporate responsibility and sustainability.

I also want to empower others by sharing the tools to run their own workshops or develop new approaches.

This is my small contribution to tackling climate change.

If you're interested, let's talk.
